The Pittsburgh Chess Club

Welcome to the Pittsburgh Chess Club! The PCC has roots going back to the early 1900s, and remains committed to serving the needs of chess players in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. We have one of the largest chess libraries you'll ever see. We also have a large supply of chess equipment. Refreshments are available.

What's New!  

• The PCC has begun holding unrated blitz tournaments, held the second Saturday of each month.

  The first of the monthly blitz tournaments was a success. 16 people showed up to play in four different quads, randomly drawn. We had people of all ages and skill levels competing. Our four winners were Joe Meadows, David Sculley, Bruce Leverett and Gary Rinehart. A special thank you goes to Joe Meadows who donated his $5 in prize money to the chess club.

  Be sure to come next month on October 11th to take part in the second of many monthly blitz tournaments.

  Each tournament begins at 4:00 PM. The entry fee is $2 and the winner of each quad will win $5. (Junior members get 75 cents worth of free food.)

  The format is a double round robin (once white and once black for each opponent). The time control is 5 minutes each side, with 2 second delay, with the following time handicap applied:

  • less than 100 point rating difference: 5 min / 5 min
  • 100-299 points: 6 min / 4 min
  • 300-499 points: 7 min / 3 min
  • 500-699 points: 8 min / 2 min
  • 700+ points: 9 min / 1 min
• The 17th Wild Card Open on Tuesday nights will have its 5th and final round on Tuesday, August 12.

  After 4 rounds, Finn Overlie is in the lead with 3.5 points.

• Sunday, August 10 will be the third PCC public chess event to be held in Schenley Plaza. This will be the PCC's last public chess event of the summer. Please come to make it the best yet!
• The 17th Wild Card Open on Tuesday nights (5 rounds) continues. After 4 rounds, Finn Overlie is in the lead with 3.5 points.
• Saturday and Sunday, July 26-27, will be the 28th Allegheny Chess Congress 4 round Swiss tournament. A lot of strong players are already registered for it!
• Sunday, July 20 was the second PCC public chess event to be held in Schenley Plaza. (June 22 was the first event in Schenley Plaza. See photos of that event.) No photos are available, unfortunately, because we forgot to bring cameras.

  The final PCC free public chess event will be held in Schenley Plaza on Sunday, August 10.

• Sunday, July 20 will be the second PCC public chess event to be held in Schenley Plaza. (June 22 was the first event in Schenley Plaza. See photos of that event.)
• The 17th Wild Card Open on Tuesday nights (5 rounds) has begun.

• Tuesday, July 15 will be the beginning of the 17th Wild Card Open. This is a popular summer tournament in which you can win big by accumulating a good poker hand!
• Sunday, June 29 will be the second time the PCC is holding an event in Market Square.
• Saturday, June 28 was the four-round 38th Fred Thompson Memorial tournament. Don Meigs won the open section, and there was a three-way tie for first in the reserve section by Paul Lucarelli, David Buhan, and David Milliern.
• Saturday, June 28 will be the four-round 38th Fred Thompson Memorial tournament.
• The 21st Richard Abrams Memorial has concluded, with Franklin Chen, Federico Garcia, and Jeff Schragin tying for first.

  The next Tuesday night tournament, the 17th Wild Card Open, begins on July 15.

• Sunday, June 22 was the date of the first PCC event to be held at Schenley Plaza. It was another success!

• We have a new tournament bulletin now, passed out each Tuesday night round highlighting interesting games of the previous week's round.

• This summer (2008) there will be a series of new free chess events by the Pittsburgh Chess Club on selected Sundays in
  • Market Square downtown, and
  • Schenley Plaza.

  The first event will be on Sunday, June 1 in Market Square. There will be play for children, simuls, speed chess, free 3-minute lessons, and more! Come downtown to play, learn, and enjoy the other summer programs in Market Square!

Location:

We are located in the Wightman Community Building (formerly the Wightman School) on Solway Street in Squirrel Hill. This is between the cross-streets of Negley Avenue and Wightman Street, one block from Wilkins Avenue.

Our hours of operation are 1pm-9pm Wednesday, and 12pm-10pm Saturday.

Events and Classes:

We frequently host USCF-rated tournaments on Tuesday nights and on weekends. Check out our tournament schedule for details. If you are currently registered for one of our Tuesday night tournaments, look for next week's pairings online.

On Sunday afternoons and Monday nights, ICCM Jerry Meyers has chess classes for young players at the PCC. More information about Jerry's classes is available here.
